The Marine Institute, Ireland’s national agency for marine research, technology, development and innovation, will host its annual Open Day on Wednesday, 23rd November, 2016 from 10.00am to 3.00pm. From Transition Year to Leaving Cert students, teachers and parents, all are welcome! Visitors will have the opportunity to tour the state of the art facilities on offer in the Marine Institute in Oranmore and to meet with researchers and scientists to hear about their careers in the marine. On November 11th, the National Final of SciFest took place in Dublin. This year’s winner was Caolann Brady, a 6th year student at St. Wolstan's School in Celbridge, Co Kildare. Caolann is the first ever female winner of SciFest, and is sure to be an inspiration to many other girls who are interested in pursuing a career in STEM.

The annual festival 13th-20th November highlights how science, technology and engineering are fundamental to everyday life, and demonstrate their importance to the future of our society and economy. Hundreds of events, activities, demonstrations, workshops, talks and interactive shows will take place across the country.

4 – 10 March: Save the date for Engineers Week 2017!

A great opportunity for second-level students and their teachers to be inspired by engineering, find out more about careers in this exciting area, and win prizes.

Hundreds of events and activities will take place across the country in schools, companies, museums and libraries. Keep an eye on Engineers Week for details of how to get involved.

These talks are great for inspiring students to think differently about school subjects, life after school and to look beyond stereotypes. Talks are typically 40 mins, taking place in your classroom. STEM volunteers can also attend parent-teacher evenings.
Teachers, counsellors, TY Coordinators etc. can register via the ‘Resources’ section of www.SmartFutures.ie and request career talks at any time of the year.

The Adult Learner “Skills for Work” competition is aimed at students undertaking FETAC Level 4 and 5 work experience modules.

The aim is to build on some of the existing work students are required to do for this module in relation to developing career skills and reflecting on their career development as a result.
